“The last word in vinyl care”: Ken Kessler reviews Clearaudio’s Double Matrix Professional Sonic record cleaning machine for The Telegraph

Vinyl might be enjoying an apparently unstoppable resurgence right now, but do we know what we’re doing with it?

“As I looked around a local shop on Record Store Day last month, it occurred to me that an entire generation (or three) has no idea how to handle vinyl LPs,” writes Ken Kessler in The Telegraph. “Lulled into a false sense of security by CDs, and later by downloads, they have no idea that a music storage format can be perishable.”

So how does one keep on top of all the dirt, dust, chemical residues and oil from fingerprints that threaten to dull the quality of, and shorten the life of, our beloved vinyl records?  Continue reading “The last word in vinyl care”: Ken Kessler reviews Clearaudio’s Double Matrix Professional Sonic record cleaning machine for The Telegraph

“Exposure has done it again”: Hi-Fi News reviews the British brand’s new XM3 phono stage

Earlier this year, Exposure Electronics launched its exciting new XM series of hi-fi components. Inspired by the unstoppable resurgence of vinyl in a digital age, the series offers a high-performance, compact solution for music lovers who want great sound across multiple media but don’t want the size or cost of their system to spiral out of control.

In the May issue of Hi-Fi News Adam Smith checks out the XM3 phono stage and asks, “does it pack a full-sized performance into a ‘half width’ chassis?”

Acrobatics, master tapes, prog rockers and threats of remortgaging the house: UK launch of Gamut’s flagship Zodiac loudspeaker was not to be missed!

And yet it was very nearly missed by ‘Mr Gamut’ himself. CEO and chief designer Benno Baun Meldgaard took a tumble down a flight of stairs just a few days before the event and, confined to bed rest, was unable to travel from Denmark to Dorset.

But as the saying goes, you can’t keep a good man down and so, undeterred by his unfortunate acrobatics, Meldgaard was adamant that he’d be there at least in spirit if not in body. Cue live video link…

“Magnificent control”: Hi-Fi News reviews Audio Analogue’s Maestro Anniversary integrated amplifier

“When you have something to celebrate, it’s worth doing it in style,” writes James Parker in the May issue of Hi-Fi News, referring to Italian amplifier specialist Audio Analogue’s two ‘Anniversary’ models to mark the brand’s two decades in the business.

Having previously been impressed by the Puccini Anniversary, the magazine’s review team now turns its attention to the Maestro Anniversary. At “twice the size and double the power” of the Puccini, will the Maestro be “doubly entertaining?”

Hi-Fi Choice Recommended: Clearaudio’s new TT5 entry-level tangential tracking tonearm

When buying consumer goods from clothes to cars, “rarely do you find the right tool for the job and when you do, you pay for it dearly,” says David Price in the May issue of Hi-Fi Choice. The world of hi-fi is no exception, with one “glaringly obvious issue” being the disparity between the way a vinyl record is pressed and the manner in which it’s played back. “Conventional arms let the stylus be dragged radially across the record as it follows the groove, but why not do it the same way as the original disc was cut?”

Enter the tangential (or parallel) tracking tonearm. Clearaudio have been making them for several decades, but they don’t tend to come cheap. So what will Price make of their latest model, the new entry-level TT5?
