“Power cables can be something of a conundrum,” admits Jon Myles in the September issue of Hi-Fi World. “There’s no doubt replacing the stock lead supplied with your CD player, amplifier, pre-amp or tuner with a specialised model can make a difference to sound quality. But at the top end prices can seem prohibitively expensive compared to the benefits.”
Enter IsoTek’s new EVO3 Initium which, at just £65 for a 1.5 metre length, promises to deliver a cost-effective upgrade to your system.
The Initium may be the brand’s new entry-level mains cable, but “it is still handsomely constructed, consisting of three 99.9999% oxygen-free copper conductors arranged in a parallel construction with a slight rotational twist to help reject RFI and EMI interference.” Add to that a cotton filler to enhance internal strength and reduce microphony, a polyethylene dielectric shielding, plus IsoTek’s bespoke connectors and you have a fairly hefty cable – “but it is flexible enough to fit into tight spaces behind racks and has a reassuring air of quality about its construction.”
Plugging the EVO3 Initium into a high-end disc player, Myles enjoyed “a palpable cleaning up of the sound with a seemingly lower noise floor and a greater sense of musical flow”, while moving the cable onto an integrated amplifier brought even more benefits. “It was an improvement that matched some power cables costing many times more.”
“The IsoTek EVO3 Initium is one of the most cost-effective power cable upgrades you can make,” concluded Myles, awarding the product the full five stars. “It comes highly recommended.”
