British rapper, singer, and songwriter J Hus was recently honoured at the GRM Daily Rated Awards, winning Album of the Year for his number one record and second album, Big Conspiracy. The album was produced using Kerr Acoustic’s K100 loudspeakers.
The executive producer of Big Conspiracy, Black Butter’s Jae5 – also known for his work with Mark Ronson, Dave, Burna Boy and Jess Glynne – was named Producer of the Year.
The awards ceremony, which celebrates the best of Black British music, took place online due to the coronavirus pandemic. Hosted by comedian Mo Gilligan and presenter Julie Adenuga, it featured performances from Kano, Dizzee Rascal, George The Poet and M Huncho.
“Jae5 approached us in 2017, in search of a full-range main monitoring system for his new studio facility,” explains Kerr Acoustic’s founder and designer, Jes Kerr. “After a short demo, he became our very first K100 customer, and we’ve maintained an excellent relationship ever since.”
It’s no secret that the K100 has its roots in the professional audio world. It was initially designed as a no-holds-barred full-range studio monitoring system. Several design iterations later, its core objectives remain the same: to reproduce any source material as faithfully and accurately as possible, without introducing any sonic artefacts or colour of its own. To achieve this requires a truly full-range frequency response, unwavering speed and time-accuracy, exceptionally high power handling and an ability to resolve fine detail at all playback levels. Crucially, a high quality pro speaker must also have the dynamic capability to accurately respond to transient peaks in the source material without compressing or introducing distortion, particularly in studio settings when frequently being fed raw, unprocessed recordings.
While these are common design objectives for most studio monitors, the K100 differentiates itself by taking a far more boutique approach to achieving these goals. By incorporating cutting-edge design features such as Baltic birch plywood transmission-line cabinets, true ribbon tweeters and premium audiophile-grade passive crossover components, previously unobtainable levels of sonic performance can be achieved. Such design features are more typically found in high-end domestic loudspeakers, which rarely possess the accuracy and dynamic capability of large studio monitors. To this extent, the K100 is essentially a hybrid – a versatile, accurate, full-range, high-resolution loudspeaker system, which is equally comfortable in the studio or in the home.
Jae5 went on to produce J Hus’ second album Big Conspiracy using the K100s. The album spent a week at Number One in the UK album charts this year. Several reviewers remarked on the sonic quality of the production, in particular the bass, which is deep and tuneful throughout.
“We have recently upgraded Jae5’s K100s to ‘K102’ specification,” adds Kerr, “incorporating an additional 12” Volt Radial™ woofer in each cabinet, which allows an extra 6dB of dynamic headroom. He’s very pleased with the results!”
