Clearaudio’s Performance turntable “has evolved almost beyond recognition over the last decade,” notes Nick Tate in the June issue of Hi-Fi News. “Will the new linear tracking TT5 arm propel it further?”
Vinyl might be enjoying an apparently unstoppable resurgence right now, but do we know what we’re doing with it?
“As I looked around a local shop on Record Store Day last month, it occurred to me that an entire generation (or three) has no idea how to handle vinyl LPs,” writes Ken Kessler in The Telegraph. “Lulled into a false sense of security by CDs, and later by downloads, they have no idea that a music storage format can be perishable.”
So how does one keep on top of all the dirt, dust, chemical residues and oil from fingerprints that threaten to dull the quality of, and shorten the life of, our beloved vinyl records? When buying consumer goods from clothes to cars, “rarely do you find the right tool for the job and when you do, you pay for it dearly,” says David Price in the May issue of Hi-Fi Choice. The world of hi-fi is no exception, with one “glaringly obvious issue” being the disparity between the way a vinyl record is pressed and the manner in which it’s played back. “Conventional arms let the stylus be dragged radially across the record as it follows the groove, but why not do it the same way as the original disc was cut?”
Enter the tangential (or parallel) tracking tonearm. Clearaudio have been making them for several decades, but they don’t tend to come cheap. So what will Price make of their latest model, the new entry-level TT5?

“2016 was dominated by turntables,” writes Paul Rigby in online magazine TheVinylFactory.com. “The year began with the news that Amazon had sold more turntables than any other home audio product over Christmas. While these decks aren’t the kind you’d wish on your worst enemy, it’s clear the appetite was there.”
Indeed – and it shows no sign of abating. According to new data just revealed by the Entertainment Retailers Association, more money was spent on vinyl album sales than digital album downloads in the UK last week” (see full story: Vinyl is killing the MP3 industry).
So if you’re a digital die-hard who’s finally considering a foray over to the vinyl side, or a turntable toe-dipper who bagged an Amazon cheapie but now hankers after an upgrade, you’re in luck. “Turntable manufacturers of all stripes have been busy and very proactive, releasing a swathe of top quality designs that will suit all budgets,” notes Rigby. But how do you choose between them?
