Launched in 2017, Furutech’s new NCF Booster is a performance-enhancing cable and connector holder. Initially it seemed a tad slow coming to worldwide distribution – because rave reviews in the Japanese press meant that initial production runs sold out to industry insiders before even making it into shops! Fortunately, the company soon increased production and now the NCF Booster is available worldwide and gathering awards.
In it’s native Japan the NCF Booster has already won two ‘Grand Prix 2018’ awards, while US-based online hi-fi magazine Enjoy the Music.com recently tagged it with a ‘Great Audiophile Gift 2017’ badge. Now, it adds to the collection a Brutus Award 2017 from another leading American audio website, Positive Feedback.com.
Every year, Positive Feedback’s editor David W Robinson and colleague Dave Clark pick out a select few products from the many and varied encountered by the magazine over the course of the previous 12 months. “These are our annual ‘best stuff we heard this year’ plaudits”, Robinson confirms, adding that all Brutus Award-winners “have been reviewed by us personally; no design will be recognized that we do not have experience with in our listening rooms.”
Cable holders (aka supports, lifters, risers or elevators) typically improve aim to the performance of audio cables by minimising their points of contact with the floor, thereby reducing electromagnetic interference. Furutech’s NCF Booster, however, goes further. As well as providing the aforementioned lift and enabling optimum alignment between connectors and sockets, it also delivers additional damping support for both cables and connectors, boosting their performance by allowing a more pure and clear signal.
As its name suggests, a key ingredient in the NCF Booster is Furutech’s Nano Crystal² Formula (NCF), an ‘active’ anti-resonance damping material exclusive to Furutech. The effect of that damping, particularly when applied to the critical junction between mains plug and socket, is to reduce audible noise significantly.
Having tested the NCF Booster’s capabilities for themselves, Robinson and Clark agree. “The new NCF Booster provides vibration control and a certain shielding right at the point that a power cable is attached to its power input. In use here at PF Central, I found that it provided a definite audio improvement, by lowering the noise floor and providing a degree of clarity.”
