AVForums, Europe’s number one home entertainment tech community, has announced its Editor’s Choice Awards for 2018, celebrating “the hi-fi products that really shone this year”. Picking up the Award for Best Hi-Fi Amplifier is Exposure Electronics’ XM5 integrated model. Quite an achievement, particularly when you consider this little amp’s compact, half-width size.
AVForums annual Editor’s Choice Awards herald the best of the best for 2018 and are the editorial team’s choice for outstanding products of the year. They’re also intensely competitive, given the wealth of high quality products currently on offer. “Right now, you have a wider choice of seriously talented products at almost every price point than has been the case for many years,” writes editor Phil Hinton. “This means that picking the best of the best is no easy task.”
Which makes the XM5’s win all the more remarkable, since this is an integrated amp that’s half the size of much of the competition!
Responding directly to the unstoppable resurgence of vinyl amid a digital age, Exposure’s XM series offers a smart solution for those who seek great performance across multiple media but don’t want the size or cost of their system to spiral out of control. Kicking off the series in early 2017, the XM5 integrated amplifier set out to put the ‘integrated’ back into integrated amplifiers, incorporating both a phonostage and a DAC – yet in an astonishingly compact half-width size.
“Not every music lover or audio enthusiast wants, or has the space or budget for, a massive hi-fi system with multiple bulky components,” explained designer Tony Brady. “But at the same time, quality of sound is once again becoming important to an increasing number of people. Many music lovers want to enjoy better performance but they still want convenience and value for money.” ‘Real world’ hi-fi at ‘real world’ prices, in other words – which is something Exposure has always been particularly strong on.
So what the XM series loses in bulk, it makes up for in detail. The XM5 features a linear power supply with a large 200VA custom-made toroidal power transformer. Only high quality resistors and capacitors are used in the signal path, while Toshiba bipolar output transistors are carefully chosen for their superior dynamic performance.
“The Exposure exemplifies everything that the company excels at – namely well engineered amplifiers that manage to balance accuracy with musical joy,” writes AVForums. “It then comes in a compact and easy to accommodate box that also contains a truly lovely sounding selection of digital inputs and a fantastic phonostage. The XM5 shows that if you take what you’re good at and tweak the details, you can still rule the roost in 2018.”
