“Maggie May”: Hi-Fi Choice urges you to check out Magnepan’s new entry level LRS loudspeaker

“Maybe you’ve heard them at a hi-fi show and were blown away by the speed, purity and coherence,” writes Chris Ward of Magnepan’s towering flat-panel loudspeakers. “Then there’ s that awful dawning realization that you would have to buy a new house first…”. Fortunately Magnepan now has something that’s perfect for the more compact and bijou listening room – and the more modest budget.

The LRS (Little Ribbon Speaker) stands just 1.2m tall and can be yours for £1,000. It’s a full-range quasi-ribbon speaker that has been created as a kind of ‘sampler’ to give you a pretty good idea of what to expect from the brand’s flagship 20.7 or 30.7 models. It was designed using high-end electronics and mono blocks, so while it will still perform nicely with an integrated amp, it will really give you what you came for with some high-end, high-current amplification – which is a radical departure from most entry-level loudspeakers.

“While the LRS represents superb value for money, it does have rather expensive taste in amplification,” agrees reviewer Ward. “It excels on a diet of high current delivery rather than pure watts, so factor in muscly amplification to get the best outcome.” Wise advice, since the rewards promise to be great…

“Lightning fast and easily able to communicate the fastest musical transients, it remains totally coherent across a surprisingly wide frequency range. Its rendition of vocals and acoustic instruments may startle you… you may soon find yourself a convert,” writes Ward.

“The LRS instantly paints a tall, deep soundstage that catches me off guard… the image it depicts will dwarf almost any other speaker at the same price. Where traditional dome tweeter and cone woofer designs have to be carefully blended to achieve a seamless presentation, the LRS just dives straight in with a vast, compelling picture that just makes complete sense.”

“I urge you to check out this bargain offering…. chances are you’ll love the LRS and may never be able to listen to traditional drivers in a box again.”

“This is a starter speaker that you may never need to upgrade, just improve the amplification and sources. It’s really that good.”
